Bas is mentioned as ΠΟΥΝΤΑΣ ΒΑΣ which can be translated as 'sea ruler' (Grk. πόντος = sea, Βας = king/ruler from Βασιλεύς) and could therefore be the Phrygian alias of Poseidon. Witczak (1992-3: 267f.) assumes etymological identity between Βας and the Mycenaean deity *Φας, Φαδος, found on the Knossos tablets in dat.sg. pa-de, pa-de-i. Βας was also a Bithynian name. King Bas of Bithynia, reigned fifty years from 376 to 326 BC and died at the age of 71. He succeeded his father Boteiras and was himself succeeded by his son Zipoetes. |
