Comments

Military term for the formation of the heavy-armed infantry. The term in Greek refers generally to a 'round and longish piece of wood, log, roller, beam'. Also a venomous spider (σφαλάγγι / lathrodectus?).

Opinions differ whether it is of Indo-European or pre-Greek origin (See Beekes 2014).
